Water Diversions

The Agreement signed by all ten Great Lakes Governors and Premiers prohibited diversions of Great Lakes water with limited exceptions.  Those exceptions are for:

  1. Communities that straddle the basin divide
  2. Intra-Basin Transfers
  3. Communities in counties that straddle the basin divide

Depending on the type of exception sought, any proposal for a diversion of Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water may need to undergo review by the Regional Body and may require approval by the Compact Council.  To date, only the City of Waukesha's proposal for a diversion has undergone such review and approval.
